Exhibition and Symposium

Held at Goldsmiths University, London, this exhibition of artworks, performance, talks and workshop took place on Saturday 13th July 2024.

The exhibition and workshop included works by Lisa Kennedy, Tamla Parris-Bah, Dr Sireita Mullings-Lawrence, Georgina Obaya Evans and Mya Onwugbonu, Vanessa Ansa and Damali Ibreck.

Invited responders and panellists included educationalist, activist and public historian Stella Dadzie and Public Historian Kelly Foster.

Underpinning this project were the guiding research questions that included:

  • When we look at pre-colonial African histories and frame our responses to narratives which highlight ordinary life, practices, rituals and societal exchanges, what opportunities arise for looking at Black and diasporic identities in new ways?
  • What can we learn from responding to more expanded histories in creative and personal ways?
  • How do our lives contribute to the making of history in the present moment?

This exhibition and symposium was made possible through Collaborate funding from the Centre for Cultural Value.
